Scrolling screenshot on Mac: the whole page as one image
A long chat, a settings list, a document or a web page rarely fits on one screen. The screenshot tool built into macOS captures what is on the screen at one moment, so a long page becomes several pictures to join by hand. SimpleShot captures it while you scroll and joins it into one tall image, in any app.
How to take a scrolling screenshot with SimpleShot
- Press ⌥⇧⌘S, or choose Scrolling Capture in the menu bar. In All-in-One, Scrolling is on the toolbar.
- Select the part of the window that scrolls.
- Scroll at a steady pace. A panel beside the area shows the joined picture and its height as it grows; if you scroll too fast, it says so, and you scroll back a little.
- Or let SimpleShot scroll for you: it scrolls until nothing moves any more. This needs the Accessibility permission, which it asks for the first time.
- Click Done. The tall image arrives like any capture: copy it, save it, drag it into an app or open it in the editor.
What it gets right
- Any app, not only a browser: chats, mail, notes, code editors, Finder lists, PDFs, settings.
- A clean join: a fixed header and footer appear once, not on every screen; a blinking cursor and the scroll bar don’t break the join.
- Long pages: up to 40,000 pixels tall.
- Private details covered: a long chat is where e-mails and numbers hide. Hide Sensitive Data works on the tall image like on any capture, and the text is read on your Mac.
- Searchable later: the Library finds the capture by any word that was on it.
When a browser does it better — honestly
For a web page alone, a browser can save the whole page itself, with the browser’s developer tools or as a PDF. It draws the page in one piece, including parts you never scrolled to, with no join at all, and a PDF keeps the text selectable. If all you need is a web page, try that first. SimpleShot is for everything else that scrolls, and for when you want to mark up, crop or hide details on the result right away.
Tips for a clean result
- Scroll steadily; a quick flick can skip lines.
- Moving content, like a playing video or a live counter, can make a join look wrong. Pause it first.
- Select only the scrolling part, without a sidebar beside it.
Questions
Can a Mac take a scrolling screenshot without an app?
The screenshot tool built into macOS captures what is on the screen at one moment, so not in other apps. A browser can save a whole web page from its developer tools or as a PDF. For anything else that scrolls, you need an app like SimpleShot.
Is SimpleShot’s scrolling capture free?
Yes. Everything on the Mac is free, with no limit on captures, no watermark and no account.
How long can the capture be?
Up to 40,000 pixels tall. That is many screens of a chat or a page.
Does it work in Chrome, Safari, Slack or Notes?
Yes. It works in any app: it captures the area you select while it scrolls, so it doesn’t depend on the app.
Are my captures uploaded?
No. Captures stay on your Mac. One leaves it only if you make a link to it.
One page.
One picture.
