Installing

Download SimpleShot, open the disk image and drag SimpleShot to Applications. Open SimpleShot from Applications; it lives in the menu bar.

Captures are black or show only the wallpaper

SimpleShot needs the Screen Recording permission. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording and turn on SimpleShot. If macOS asks to quit and reopen SimpleShot, do it.

A shortcut does nothing

Another app may use the same keys. Choose different keys in SimpleShot › Settings › Shortcuts. To use ⇧⌘4 and the other system keys for SimpleShot, first turn them off in System Settings › Keyboard › Keyboard Shortcuts › Screenshots.

Keystrokes don't show in a recording

Showing keystrokes needs the Accessibility permission: System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility, turn on SimpleShot, then record again.

Where are my captures?

Every capture is in the history (⌥⇧⌘H). Saved files go to the folder in SimpleShot › Settings › General (the Desktop unless you change it).

Uninstalling

Quit SimpleShot from its menu, drag it from Applications to the Trash, and delete ~/Library/Application Support/SimpleShot to remove the history.
